Irish crooners Westlife are so desperate to crack America, they're spending over US$1.5 million revamping their image for a stateside assault.  The band last year vowed never to return to US after failing to make an impression with a tour there.  But, after slimming down and restyling their image, the five-piece are ready for a second go.  The boys have recruited video maestro Atti J - who has worked with Wyclef Jean - to reshoot their "world of our own" video, complete with new hairstyles and expensive designer clothes, ready for their assault on the US charts in August 2002.  And new American manager Robert Livingston is so convinced Westlife can crack USA, he has booked them to appear on top rated US chat shows THe Late Show with David Letterman, the Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Entertainment Tonight.  A huge veil of secrecy surrounds the band's new Svelte and trendy look - which will be revealed at London's Party In The Park next month.  A source tell sBritish tabloid Daily Star, "Westlife know how much effort needs to crack America and they're psyched up for it.  The record label have earmarked a million pounds to make it work."

In a bid to make it big in the States, Westlife are spending more than 1 million pounds on an image overhaul.  The Lifers have already tried and faild to crack the US market, but have now come up with a new direction.  They've hooked up with Wyclef's manager, Robert Livingston, to help them hit the big time and the image revamp is the first part of the plan.  The lads will show off their new look at Party In The Park in Hyde Park on july 7.  Apparently, we can expect a fancy new haircuts and cutting edge clobber.

By MTVAsia.com's SHEILA PRICE

One thing makes a Westlife concert stand out from the others. Noise.

They have -- without a shadow of a doubt -- some of the noisiest and most hysterical fans in the world. And when about 18,000 frenzied, mostly young, girls start screaming and waving multicolored strobe lights you certainly know about it. Their recent Earls Court concert was a massive sell out and quashed rumors that the Irish lads were overweight and over the hill.

The crowd's reaction, as five globes open to reveal their heroes clad in dangerous looking knee length leather coats, is nothing short of ear splitting. The boys in black are then lowered -- only a well-fed Bryan McFadden straining the cable -- onto a round, centrally located stage allowing them to prowl around it at their leisure strutting their stuff and belting out hits like "World Of Our Own," "Queen Of My Heart," and "Coast To Coast."

To get even closer to their adoring fans they occasionally walk out onto a metal bow, leaning against the railings while they serenade the massed hordes below. As the concert progresses a reassuring pattern emerges as the boys disappear below for a costume change to be replaced by five sexy dancers who work with a submerged band to keep the eager fans happy until the boys return.

This pattern is slick but too many costume changes blunted the concert's natural momentum and made it difficult for the initially electric atmosphere to be restored. While the band changed into their tuxes or pirate-like garb some of the girls around us slumped back into their seats and the concert lost some of its edge.

Another odd feature was the sometimes bizarre behavior of McFadden who continually rebelled, refusing to toe the company line and fall into step with his band mates. At one point, as the other lads strenuously song and danced their way around the stage trying to pump up the crowd, a slightly bloated McFadden removed his dinner jacket and lay on his back going solo ala Eric Clapton in his early drink fuelled days.

Whether the group's official hell raiser had been enjoying a few pints of Guinness before the show is anybody's guess. Could he be Take That's answer to Robbie Williams? Remember Robbie also looked terrible and liked to party in his boy band days.

Overall Westlife were highly entertaining and, aided by some fairly nifty stage mechanics and tireless band and dancers, gave an expectant crowd exactly what they wanted. They may not be the best singers or dancers on the block but they know how to charge up big venues.

It was certainly a big step up from their visit to Singapore when they put in a slightly lackluster performance, not helped by a bare stage, no dancers or band. Two years on, they are a much more polished act even if stage hype and a loud band sometimes covers up for a few stray notes and wonky dance movements.

Westlife star Bryan McFadden missed a party with the Irish soccer team to be with his wife Kerry as she was rushed to hospital.

The party was in Lillies Bordello last week but Bryan had to be with his wife and former Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona was rushed to Mount Carmel hospital in Dublin.

The singer was expected to join the team in Lillies where the rest of Westlife celebrated the end of their twelve nights of shows in the Point. But after the band's concert Bryan was forced to rush to Mount Carmel where Kerry had been taken on Tuesday evening after a scare involving the cist which plagued her after the birth of the couple's daughter Molly last year.

Thankfully after being kept in for just one night Kerry was released on Wednesday morning and is back in great shape again.

Bryan was expected to join new band Fifth Avenue in Lillies, with whom he is currently working.

Ireland's world cup hero Robbie Keane spent most of the night showing the girls from Louis Walsh's all girl band Bellefire, who had earlier sang at the homecoming party in the park, a good time.

Westlife are expected to appear at an open-air concert in Ireland this afternoon, to pay tribute to the heroic efforts of the nation's football team.

The boyband are to headline an impromptu show in Dublin's Phoenix Park, which is set to be attended by thousands of Irish football and music fans.

As many as 100,000 people are likely to enjoy the occasion, with groups such as Westlife, Bellfire and Six set to perform for in the city, before the team arrive back from Japan.

A spokesman for the company behind the event explained the players "are the main focus". Gar Holohan told ananova.com: "We are trying for something that will combine the football and entertainment worlds".

Despite the hopes of the people of Ireland, the Irish are unlikely to embark on an open-top bus ride through the city, due to safety fears.

The Irish World Cup squad returned to Dublin on 18 June, only to find 100 000 footy fans waiting to greet them.  If that wasn't enough for the players, who'd just had to sit through a fourteen hour flight from South Korea, they also had another big surprise in store.  Their biggest fans (our lads) were waiting to sing for them, and to congratulate them on their amazing world cup results.  Westlife wore very patriotic jackets, covered with the three colors of the Irish Flag.

You can't blink these days without some squeaky-clean boy bander deciding that he's had enough of manufactured pop and going all rawk on us!

S Club's Paul Cattermole left his merry band to join a nu-metal group and even the mighty Sir Robbie of Williams is working with the Cult's Billy Morrison.

Now Bryan Westlife is swapping his suit for a suitably scruffy leather look! The hunky heartthrob is managing, producing and writing for a rock group, which he is keeping under wraps. He told the Sun: "I'm not just a boy band robot. The new band is secret at the moment as it is early days but I am really excited about them."

So, can we expect Bry's leather trousers to get even tighter? We do hope so!

Westlife to play at Ireland homecoming

Westlife are set to lead the pop world's tribute to Ireland's World Cup soccer squad in Dublin.

The group will head the list of performers at an open air concert being staged at Phoenix Park.

Tens of thousands of Irish soccer fans are expected to pack the venue to welcome home their World Cup heroes.

Bands Bellfire and Six will also play.

Gar Holohan, of the architects firm called in to organise the event, said: "We are trying to make sure the players are the main focus.

"We are trying for something that will combine the football and entertainment worlds."

The bands will play for close on two hours before the players arrive by helicopter from Dublin airport, following their late afternoon arrival there and private reunions with their families. Weather prospects were uncertain for the big show, with occasional showers forecast nationwide.

Hopes that the team might parade through the centre of Dublin in an open-top bus were scuppered by fears for the safety of the supporters expected to be on hand to greet the squad.

According to some estimates as many as 100,000 soccer faithful could crowd into the park for the occasion, which is to be shown live on Ireland's state-backed RTE TV network.

The whole area will be closed to traffic from around mid-day and a fleet of 150 buses is being laid on to transfer the crowd from the centre of Dublin.

POP idols Westlife and 100,000 fans gave Irelands World Cup heroes a rousing welcome home last night.

A £300,000 bash bankrolled by the Irish government was laid on for the team at Dublins Phoenix Park.

A fleet of 170 free-fare buses ferried revellers to the open air salute. And the players and manager Mick McCarthy were taken to the park after their jet landed at Dublin airport

Westlife, dressed in green, white and gold, squeezed in a performance for the fans before being whisked to a gig in the Irish capital.

They sang A World Of Our Own just before the team arrived. Six and Samantha Mumbas brother Omera also wowed the crowd.

Ireland only missed making the last eight because Spain beat them on penalties. And one fan said: To a man they all played brilliantly. We couldnt have asked anything more of them.

Delighted McCarthy told the supporters: We were told to expect a reception but honestly never expected anything like this. You are just amazing.

Robbie Keane and Damien Duff got the loudest cheer as they took a bow on stage with defender Richard Dunne.

Robbie said: Youre the best fans in the world.

Goalie Shay Given led the crowd in a chorus of Happy Birthday to Jason McAteer, 31, yesterday

Sunday's Live n Loud festival has been officially canceled.  Fans hoping to see Westlife, Blue, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Liberty X have been left dissapointed after Scottish police axed the event.  They claim extremely bad weather and flooding could cause serious safety risks to the public going to the event at Glasgow's Bellahoustan Park.  it has not yet been confirmed whether the festival will be rescheduled or if ticket holders will get refunds.  Tune into Clyde 1 radio station on 102.5 FM for more info.  The festival had already suffered a few problems earlier this week then westlife were rumoured to have pulled out of the gig.  The boys had said they might not perform as it clashes with Ireland's World Cup game against Spain.  Although they changed their minds and were set to go on stage, it looks as if fate is on footie's side and everyone can now watch the game.

Weather forces cancellation of Westlife concert

Thirty thousand pop fans have been left disappointed after organisers cancelled a major concert due to bad weather.

The joint organisers of Irn-Bru Live + Loud decided not to go ahead with the gig because the venue has become waterlogged.

The event, which was due to go ahead at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow on Sunday afternoon, could now be rescheduled.

Westlife were due to headline at the event, with other top acts such as A1, Blue, the Sugababes, Lulu, Samantha Mumba and H and Claire included in the all-star line up.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "All the organisers involved have decided that conditions are just too wet for the concert to go ahead.

"For safety reasons they have agreed to cancel the event. The weather forecast is not good for the coming few days and they did not think the grounds would be dry on time for such an event."

Westlife had threatened to pull out of the gig earlier this week when they said they wanted to watch the Republic of Ireland play Spain in the World Cup.

The band later announced plans to watch the game at the home of Celtic Football Club, but the management said the group would now be watching the crunch match in Dublin.

Westlife have decided not to pull out of a major concert which clashed with the Republic of Ireland's next World Cup match.

They say they will watch the game before the gig at the home of Celtic football club.  There was speculation that the band had pulled out of the concert.  But the Irish heart-throbs have decided to jet into Glasgow earlier than planned to view the match against Spain at the Parkhead ground with Celtic players.  They say they will still headline the Iru-Bru Live and Loud concert in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, in front of 30,000 fans.

The band, all huge football fans, were worried they would miss the match and asked their management team to change their schedule for the day.

Now the band are to fly into Glasgow a couple of hours earlier than planned and head straight to Parkhead to enjoy the Irish game against Spain with the Scottish champions.

They will headline the gig before flying to Dublin for another concert later that night.  A spokesman for the band said: "The lads have decided to play the concert after all, after a bit of juggling about with timetables."They really wanted to appear at the concert and are delighted that things have worked out well for everyone."

Westlife in Concert & Bryan on Babies...

Dublin rocked over the weekend as Westlife, Six, Santana and The Pogues all kicked off Ireland's concert season.

Westlife's Bryan McFadden even took time out of the bands 12-date tour to explain how himself and his wife Kerry Katona are trying for more kids.

"I want more kids now," Bryan admitted. "All together I would like three or four kids but that's just me. I haven't discussed numbers with Kerry yet but we are trying for more kids at the moment and we would love to give little Molly a brother or sister sooner rather then later."

He went on, "As for everything else as soon as we finished the tour I'm going to take Kerry and Molly away on an exotic holiday to get what has happened over the past few months out of our hair. Kerry is still working on her TV career so we will have make time for the break, which we will as soon as the tour ends. To be honest I can't wait because I'm knackered at this stage."

Despite claiming to be single, Kian Westlife has been seen in a swanky jewelry store with his secret gf!  Kian and Jessica, who was a dancer on Westlife's tour last year and cances in Liberty X's video for 'Just A little', were photographed in the plush Cartier store in London over the weekend.  The couple looked very happy and loved up as they spent hours browsing in the shop.  They made a quick exit by hopping into a taxy when photographers arrived outside.  While we're on about Westlife, we think the group may have just found their sixth member!  The guys finished off the London leg of their tour at Earls Court on Saturday and received extra loud screams when they were joined on stage by Gareth Gates! Nicky introduced Gareth as their 'special friend' and he sang Bryan's verse during 'My Love'.  After his brilliant performance, all the guys gave Gareth a big cuddle and he left the set, with the girls in the audience going wild for more.

WESTLIFE EARLS COURT, LONDON

There's high drama at Earls Court tonight. The time is 8:00pm. 18,000 fans aged between 5 and 55 are gearing-up to go ballistic. Westlife are about to make their live return to the Capital after an unusually low entry to the singles chart at Number 5. A massive stage resembling a parked flying saucer sits in the middle of the arena. On it are five mysterious looking black pods.8:35pm and the wait is getting too much. Suddenly the audience rises in unison like a pack of inquisitive meercats. Is it the band? No - shockingly a fight has broken out. Bouncers dive in and drag two grown women apart, kicking and screaming. Much finger pointing and shouting follows as security do their best to diffuse the tension. It really is all going off. Finally the lights go down, the pods become globes and rise to the ceiling. 8:50pm mild pandemonium ensues. The lads emerge from them; float down to the stage clad in full-length Mad Max style leather coats and take their positions on separate points of the pentagonal stage. Something
resembling 'World Of Our Own' then kicks in but it's hard to tell. The sound is akin to playing their album on a low quality hi-fi sealed in an oil drum and surrounded with screaming girls.  The show then consists of the boys gradually circling the 'in-the-round' stage so we get an equal amount of time with each. There are costume changes involving an empty stage and turgid jamming from the band, a mere five dancers and very little action to speak of.

There's the occasional inaudible chat, they sing happy birthday to Mark and play a medley of covers, crucifying 'Brown Eyed Girl'. It isn't until the inevitable encore that there is any spectacle to speak of. Their guitarist performs a solo with Kiss-esque pyrotechnics and the boys fly, without wings, but on harnesses above our heads.
Essentially, Westlife are a massive bowl of pasta without sauce. They certainly do the job and do it well but after their forefathers Boyzone they are the ultimate boybland (sic) geared to please all ages without offending anyone's palette. Their live experience features only a mere sprinkling of Parmesan to add any flavour. Thoroughly upstaged by the pre-show shenanigans, on this form a Number 5 is all they deserve.

tournament on Sunday, May 26 at Chelsea FCs Stamford Bridge
stadium.

Westlifes six-a-side team, which included former England player
Bryan Robson, scored a dramatic last-minute goal in the final against
tournament favourites Ant and Decs team to win the game 3-2 and
be crowned champions.

Ant and Decs hotly tipped team contained former Steps member
Lee Latchford Evans Jonathan Wilkes, Michael Greco from 'EastEnders'
and football pro Peter Beardsley.

Others trying to bend it like Beckham at the charity tournament
included Blue, Mis-Teeq, Dane Bowers, HearSay, Damon Albarn and
Toploader.

Several ex-band members also graced the pitch: former Five
members Abs Breen and Ritchie Neville, and former Boyzone member
Keith Duffy were back in the spotlight (well, floodlights really) for
the afternoon. Former All Saint Shaznay Lewis was also on-hand to
show that footballs not just a boys sport, as was former Atomic
Kitten, Kerry Katona.

Kerry made sure everyone knew things were back on track between
her and hubby Bryan McFadden, as they stood around all day
snogging and pinching each others bums.
